From a young age, we’re asked the simple yet daunting question, what are you going to be when you grow up? Adults are amused and delighted by the responses, and in some cases, childhood career dreams come true. For others, their career path remains an open, fluid question. In the current labour market, it is now likely to change jobs multiple times throughout your career, and even make big career changes.
If your students’ career path is an open question, or if they are exploring their career strengths, Fanshawe is here to help. Every day we answer questions like, What jobs are out there? What’s the right job for me? How do I get started? So we developed a suite of prep programs to help them get started with their career journey, and the Pathfinder Quiz, a tool to help students find the right career path for them.
Consider a prep program where students can explore their interests and decide on a more specific career path
At Fanshawe, our prep programs provide foundational knowledge and skills students need to branch out into particular fields of study. Students earn an Ontario College Certificate in just eight months of full-time study, or two years of part-time study. From there, they can choose to advance their credentials with a diploma, advanced diploma or degree. If your student is interested in a career but unsure if it’s the right fit, our prep programs are the perfect starting point.
Fanshawe offers nine different prep programs across various career fields so students can step into their chosen area of study feeling confident. For instance, start with our Pre-Technology program if they’re curious about technology but need a closer look. Then, they may move on to explore areas like Building Technology, Applied Science and Technology, Transportation Technology, or even Aviation and Aerospace Technology.
Prep programs are also the perfect option if students are looking to gain more foundational knowledge or improve their academic standing before starting a specific program. For example, successfully completing our Pre-health Sciences Pathway not only prepares students for one of our health career programs but it also gives additional consideration when they apply for these competitive programs.
What is the Pathfinder Quiz?
Fanshawe’s Pathfinder assessment is an easy way to discover career and program pathways that match your interests and strengths. Pathfinder is based on the most respected and widely used career theory, Holland’s Theory of Career Choice, which was developed by internationally-recognized counselling psychologist, Dr. Lawrence K. Jones, NCC.

- Complete the Pathfinder Quiz form to get started
- Decide whether statements about yourself are true, mostly true or not true
- Pathfinder will determine your Holland Code interest areas (Realistic, Investigative, Artistic, Social, Enterprising or Conventional) and suggest Fanshawe programs most suited to your career pathway
