Tomorrow’s Careers Today

The world of work is changing faster than ever, and today’s students are growing up in the middle of it. While we can’t predict what jobs will exist 20 years from now, we can help students develop the mindsets and skills they’ll need to thrive in whatever comes next.

Exploring the Jobs of Tomorrow

Many of today’s most in-demand careers didn’t even exist a few years ago. Social media managers, app developers, drone operators, and AI consultants are just a few examples of jobs that have emerged in recent years. The trend isn’t slowing down. If anything, it’s getting faster.

So how do we prepare students for jobs that don’t yet exist? For starters, we can expose them to emerging fields. A great place to start is our Career Profiles page. Here students can explore our collection of over 700 career profiles. Not only will they learn about people’s jobs, but they will also learn why people love what they do, what motivates them, and how their job makes a difference in the world. They will also be able to see that their career path doesn’t have to be linear. They might have multiple careers, create their own jobs, or work in fields that combine several interests.

Did you know that an AI Ethical Counsellor is a real job? Students can explore jobs of the future on the That’s a Real Job! page.

Building Tomorrow-Ready Skills

We can prepare students for tomorrow’s jobs by helping them to develop transferable skills that will remain valuable regardless of technological changes. Critical thinking, problem-solving, communication, and adaptability are just a few of these skills. So is having a growth mindset and not being afraid of failure.

Educators can help students develop these skills by using learning strategies such as Think-Discuss-Decide and Fishbone. Learning strategies are powerful tools for educators, as they help students develop essential skills that can be applied across a wide range of learning contexts. Let’s Talk Science offers a rich and diverse collection of these strategies, designed to support meaningful and effective learning.

Making Career Exploration Fun

Exploring careers can be both informative and fun. With the Let’s Talk Careers Competition, students in grades 6 to 12 and their schools can win prizes while becoming better informed about career and post-secondary options. For each day of the competition, students complete a 10 question quiz. Successful answers earn them points on their personal leaderboards and school totals. The more days they participate, the higher their scores can be. Let’s Talk Careers is a fun way for students to research and explore thousands of higher education and career options in STEM.
